During this festive season, Christmas parties and celebrations are happening all week at Aunty Mary's house to commemorate the joyous occasion of the Birth of Christ the Savior. Since she prepares for the festivities well in advance, Aunty Mary's home always resembles a small festive carnival. Recently, my brother has been roaming around her house, drawn in by the Christmas celebrations. Each year, instead of sticking to the same dishes, Aunty Mary adds a variety of festive recipes to her Christmas table. She has been incredibly kind and helpful, teaching me many new Christmas dishes over the years. My brother has been making a big fuss, asking me to prepare one of Aunty Mary's newest dishes that he tasted at her home. So, I decided to make that pudding the very next day after getting the recipe from Aunty Mary.
I was feeling overwhelmed that day when my brother praised this Christmas trifle I made, which combined fruit cake and chocolate cake both. I mixed the fruits with king coconut wine, following Aunty Mary's instructions. Even though our grandmother doesn't like a strong liquor taste, the original flavour wouldn’t be enhanced by omitting any ingredients. I decided to incorporate the wine into the pudding. King coconut wine is a popular type of wine in Sri Lanka. It has a slightly thick consistency and a hint of sweetness. Aunty Mary began the wine-making process with freshly plucked king coconuts in November. She typically produces a large quantity of wine in big wooden barrels. I have also made king coconut wine a few times at home. However, just like the rest of the preserved foods, the wine quickly disappeared due to my brother's frequent tastings. Because of this, I haven't made much wine since, as it tends to vanish into his stomach before long. Frequent wine drinking can become addictive. Even when I do make wine, I don’t keep it at home; instead, I distribute it to my neighbours. I could see how my brother's face lit up when he received a wine bottle from older brother, Krishantha.
I gathered all the ingredients for Aunty Mary's pudding from the Negombo town. I made the ginger preserve(candied ginger) the day before, and there is enough to last for a year or so. This time, the Elder Aunt's harvested ginger wasn’t very spicy, so I boiled the ginger water only once. When ginger is cooked in sugar syrup, its taste and spiciness become more intense over time.
As I was preparing the Christmas trifle, I found myself wishing sincerely for everyone in the world to have the happiest and most joyous Christmas, along with a prosperous and peaceful New Year. The holy land, the birthplace of the Prince of Peace, has become gloomy and dark, and today, peace seems to be nowhere to be found. Due to the greed of certain individuals fighting over the lands of this beautiful Earth, even innocent newborns and toddlers are enduring unimaginable suffering, perishing by the dozens. The Supreme Lord Buddha taught us that the only way to extinguish the fire of hatred is through love, compassion, and kindness. Our sincere wish for all peace-loving world leaders is that the message of peace, love, and compassion from the glorious Prince of Peace serves as an eternal blessing in the upcoming new year. May their hearts be filled with togetherness, kindness, and selfless love, uniting to extinguish the raging fires of war and the destruction of innocent lives. This is my personal thinking. I wish you all A Merry Christmas and Happiest and a peaceful New Year!
Love you All!
