I used to build beds with wood, with cinder blocks, with stones, with bricks and even with bottles.
No more! Now I stick to the super easy raised beds recommended by John Jeavons. However, unlike Jeavons, I use wider spacing. I also do my digging with a broadfork and a triangular hoe as I find that a lot easier than using a fork and a spade.
If you want spring gardening inspiration, this video is for you. These raised beds can be made in an hour or less and the plants love them just as much as beds with borders. Why make cedar raised beds or square foot garden beds with pressure treated lumber when you can just dig mounded beds like these? It's so easy - and I find these easy raised beds better when it comes to weeding as well. There's no wood for the weeds to work themselves in around. It's probably the easiest garden you can make and it's free!
The wide garden spacing allows you to save on water and the deep loosening of the soil really makes transplants happy.
You can make these beds with a fork and spade if you don't have a Meadow Creature broadfork or a triangular hoe. I used to do them that way and it only takes a little longer - but I like the ease of a broadfork. Either way, it's an easy gardening method!
