Polynesia is a naval-oriented civilization. While they don’t have any unique ships, their civilization bonus allows their land and naval units to embark onto deep ocean tiles, which allows them to explore and settle islands long before anyone else. This allows them to pick up a lot of ancient ruins and find good expand locations early on.

Their unique warriors may not be incredibly strong, but they retain their fearful promotions through upgrades, and while it is not fantastic, it sure is a nice bonus. Their unique tile improvements provides them with a large culture pool, making it very difficult for other civilizations to win a cultural victory against them.
