*update* I added a follow up video here showing the skimmer after a few years in operation. [ Ссылка ]
After seeing the floating weir design of the Helix pond skimmer ([ Ссылка ]) I decided to add one to my pond. I don't have enough space for one of their skimmers, so I chose to retro-fit a similar design into my old Atlantic skimmer box.
I cut some 1/4" expanded PVC panels to fit the skimmer, making three chambers. One in the back where the pump lives, and two in the front. The front two are divided by a basket that holds the floating weir. The basket and weir are standard swimming pool filter parts. The whole project was roughly $60 for the plastic, basket and weir from Amazon.
I do not yet have any filter pads below the basket, like the Helix design does. My pump can handle 1/4" solids, which is bigger than anything the filter basket will allow through. I'm hoping that means I can do my mechanical filtration post-pump in an external filter. If that doesn't work out, I'll add a filter pad to the skimmer somehow. I hope to have a follow up video with the new external filter design in a week or so.
