STORYLINE
The US special envoy on North Korea's human rights departed for Pyongyang from Beijing on Tuesday.
Robert King and his team said nothing to reporters as they walked through the terminal building at Beijing airport.
The aim of King's trip is to evaluate a request from North Korea for food and aid.
The US team will travel beyond the capital Pyongyang to other parts of North Korea, the US State Department announced earlier.
On the border between the two Koreas, military policemen from the South went about their business, while a North Korean soldier was seen looking through binoculars.
Meanwhile, North Korean leader Kim Jong II arrived in the eastern Chinese city of Nanjing on Tuesday, South Korean media reported.
