The very first mention of a leviathan comes in Job 3:8 where it says “Let those curse it who curse the day, who are ready to rouse up Leviathan.” The Hebrew word for leviathan means coiled and twisted and stand for a sea monster, dinosaur or dragon. In the spiritual realm, it refers to wicked spirits in high or powerful places. The psalmist in declaring the power of God wrote “You crushed the heads of Leviathan; you gave him as food for the creatures of the wilderness” (Psalm 74:4). Just as Jesus crushed the serpent at Calvary, this spirit that was strong in the earth. We read in Isaiah 27:1 “In that day the Lord with his hard and great and strong sword will punish Leviathan the fleeing serpent, Leviathan the twisting serpent, and he will slay the dragon that is in the sea.” Just as one day the Lord will take the devil from the sea of humanity and the world, and cast him into the lake of fire. The disciples found that only Jesus could cast this giant spirit, as they had not prayed or fasted. Later on they also after Jesus' departure and the infusion of the Holy Spirit were casting out demons after fasting and prayer in every place they went in the world through the power, blood authority and name of Jesus.
