Transcript:
Max Karl Ernst Ludwig Planck born on 23rd April 1858 was a German theoretical physicist whose groundbreaking work in quantum theory revolutionized the understanding of atomic and subatomic processes. Born into a family deeply rooted in academia and intellectual pursuits, Planck exhibited remarkable talent from an early age.
Planck's journey into the world of physics began during his schooling in Munich, where he developed a keen interest in mathematics and mechanics under the guidance of Hermann Müller. Despite initial discouragement from his mentor Philipp von Jolly, who believed the field of physics had little left to discover, Planck persisted, driven by a desire to comprehend the fundamental principles of the universe.
After completing his education at the University of Munich and the Friedrich Wilhelms University in Berlin, Planck delved into the study of thermodynamics, focusing on the concept of entropy. His seminal work on black-body radiation, culminating in the formulation of Planck's radiation law in 1900, marked a significant turning point in his career. This law, which introduced the notion of energy quantization, laid the foundation for quantum theory and earned Planck the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1918.
Throughout his academic career, Planck held prestigious positions at universities in Kiel, Berlin, and other institutions, where he made significant contributions to theoretical physics. His steadfast commitment to scientific inquiry was evident in his collaborations with leading figures such as Albert Einstein, whose theories of relativity Planck recognized and supported early on.
Despite living through tumultuous times, including both World Wars and the rise of the Nazi regime in Germany, Planck remained dedicated to his work and principles. He endured personal tragedies, including the loss of family members during the conflicts and the imprisonment and execution of his son Erwin for his involvement in a plot against Hitler.
Planck's steadfastness and unwavering pursuit of scientific truth made him a beacon of integrity in the face of political upheaval. Even as the Nazis rose to power and imposed their ideology on scientific institutions, Planck maintained his dignity and advocated for the preservation of academic freedom.
After the war, Planck's contributions to physics continued to be recognized, and he remained active in scientific discourse until his final days. His legacy endures not only in his groundbreaking discoveries but also in his commitment to the pursuit of knowledge and his unwavering moral compass.
Max Planck's passing in 1947 marked the end of an era in physics, but his influence reverberates to this day, inspiring generations of scientists to push the boundaries of human understanding and uphold the principles of intellectual honesty and integrity. His grave in Göttingen stands as a testament to his enduring legacy and his profound impact on the world of science.
