The Sacred Cats of Ancient Egypt: A Fascinating Tale
An interesting fact about Ancient Egypt is the importance that the Egyptians gave to cats. They believed that these animals were sacred and representatives of the goddess Bastet, goddess of the home, fertility and women's secrets. Killing a cat, even accidentally, was considered a very serious crime, punishable by death. In addition, families used to mummify their cats after death and bury them in special necropolises, sometimes along with offerings of mummified mice so that they would have food in the afterlife. The reverence for cats was so great that, during a battle, Egyptian soldiers preferred to surrender to the Persians rather than risk the lives of their sacred felines, which had been brought onto the battlefield as an enemy strategy.
