2022 marks 60 years since Sean Connery brought James Bond to life on the silver screen in the film Dr. No. Since then, the 007 franchise has spawned 26 James Bond films. The debonair MI6 secret agent wears some serious wrist candy in every movie. Many are tricked out with various spy gadgets, such as lasers and bomb denotators. Initially, he wore watches like the Rolex Submariner, Breitling Top Time, Seiko M354 Memory Bank Calendar, and TAG Heuer Professional Night Diver.
It wasn’t until 1995, when Pierce Brosnan took his turn as Agent 007 in GoldenEye, that we got our first glimpse of the Omega Seamaster within the Bond film franchise. As Oscar-winning costume designer Lindy Hemming so eloquently put it,
“I was convinced that Commander Bond, a naval man, a diver, and a discreet gentleman of the world, would wear the Seamaster with the blue dial.”
The Seamaster has been Bond’s signature watch ever since, appearing on his wrist in every film since 1995. While Omega has dreamed up many unique variations of the maritime watch, including a more recent and vintage-inspired titanium model designed by Bond actor Daniel Craig, it is the blue wave dial Seamaster that so many associate with Bond.
This week’s featured watch, ref. 210.30.42.20.03.002, pays homage to the Seamaster’s journey through the Bond films by featuring a blue wave dial like the GoldenEye watch and the same Milanese-style bracelet from the titanium watch Craige recently wore in No Time To Die.
Omega has incorporated the famous James Bond gun barrel opening sequence on many of its 007 watches in some way or another. However, this model is particularly innovative because it uses a “moiré” effect to play the opening sequence as a four-frame animation linked to the movement of the lollipop seconds hand.
Ref. 210.30.42.20.03.002 also features a blue oxalic anodized aluminum dial with sharp, laser-engraved waves, Super-LumiNova, domed scratch-resistant sapphire, and the caliber 8806 Master Chronometer.
The bezel is in blue to match the dial and features a commemorative “60” on the diving scale where there would usually be an inverted triangle.
