Notre Dame.
My students know that I’m not that good with words, but I once discussed architecture to them and why it was so important for us to restore them, and, as artists, to remember them. I thought this might be something to discuss—
People sang Ave Maria as 400 fire fighters braved to stop the fire, we cried after hearing that a part of its structure has collapsed and worried for the relics and art that might have been damaged inside, we have painted and photographed it to commemorate and preserve it as artists do in response to catastrophes throughout history. Why? It is our humaneness that we often forget in our now busy world.
We are reminded that we are capable of admiration, passion, preservation, destruction, and creation. Today, the heart of Paris stands tall despite the flames, we now gather to mourn and to save this part of our humanity and our history.
I know that we have failed to save and have neglected other historical architectures in many different places; but let this be a reminder that with enough people, what has fallen can rise again.
