The Philippines says it plans to acquire the US Typhon missile system to “protect floating assets,” prompting warnings from China of a regional "arms race."
The US Army kept the mid-range missile system in the northern Philippines after deploying it there earlier this year for annual joint military exercises.
Philippine Army chief Lieutenant-General Roy Galido said the Typhon’s “feasibility and functionality” fits in “our concept of archipelagic defence implementation". Bejing said Manila was enabling "outsider" US to fuel regional tensions with the "provocative and dangerous move" of acquiring the Typhon. Chinese forces have engaged in escalating confrontations in recent months with the Philippines over disputed reefs and waters in the South China Sea. Watch this video to know more.
