Ultrasound has been used by doctors for more than five decades to image the human body. Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to produce pictures of the inside of the body and is commonly used during pregnancy to image the fetus. Transvaginal ultrasound is a more invasive procedure that is used to monitor the fetus early in pregnancy, as well as to test for conditions such as ectopic pregnancies, pelvic abnormalities, infertility and ovarian cancer.
