The Resilience of Jim Plunkett, a Raiders Legend



In 1971 Jim Plunkett graduated from Stanford University as a promising prospect and was chosen as the first overall pick in the 1971 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots. The expectations were immense: he was meant to be the quarterback who would finally lead the Patriots into a new era of glory. However the story took a different turn. After a few difficult seasons without leading the team to success, Plunkett felt that his time with the Patriots was coming to an end. He decided to request a trade, believing his future would shine elsewhere, and thus he ended up in San Francisco, hoping for a fresh start.

Yet the pressure Plunkett faced in San Francisco was overwhelming, and after two disappointing seasons, he was physically and mentally exhausted. To many it seemed his career as a quarterback was destined for failure. However fate offered him one more chance in 1978 when he joined the Oakland Raiders.
