(11 Aug 2015) Peruvian police on Monday announced the capture of two members of the Shining Path rebel group, who were flown to an airport in the capital Lima.
One of those captured is Alexander Alarcon Soto, aka Renan, who allegedly brought down a police helicopter in 2012, killing eight members of the security forces.
Alexander Alarcon Soto and Dionicio Ramos, were captured in Kiteni, around 270 miles (434 kilometres) east of Lima, on Sunday and were flown to the Peruvian capital on Monday where they were paraded in front of the media.
Officials say 38-year-old Alarcon Soto took part in an attack on a helicopter flying on a mission to rescue 36 kidnapped gas workers in April 2012.
Peru's Deputy Defence Minister Ivan Vega told reporters on Monday that the arrests had broken the backbone of the rebel group in the south of the country.
