The bony parts of your ribs are connected to your breastbone (sternum) by cartilage, a soft flexible tissue that allows for expansion and flexibility in the chest area.
The symptoms of torn or bruised rib cartilage depend on the type and severity of the injury, but typically include the following.
* Pain and discomfort near the center of the chest, especially when touched or pressed.
* Pain with movement, as when you take a deep breath, cough, sneeze or laugh.
* Crunching or grinding sounds when the injury site is moved.
* Deformed appearance on the surface of the rib cage.
* Breathing difficulties.
There are a number of reasons for rib cartilage pain and discomfort, including the following.
* Bruising, often caused by blunt force trauma suffered in an accident or during sports competition. Blood vessels rupture and leak blood into the surrounding tissues.
* Straining the intercostal muscles, which allow the rib cage to move up and down. This type of injury often occurs when you push, pull, or lift something that's too heavy. These muscles can be also be strained by repetitive use, such as the type that occurs in sports like golf and tennis.
* Tearing the cartilage is another cause of discomfort, especially if the cartilage is completely torn loose from the breastbone. This is known as costochondral separation.
