ASEAN foreign ministers took time out from their official duties at the ASEAN conference in the Indonesian capital Jakarta on Monday (22/7) to play a game of golf. Meanwhile, Burmese Foreign Minister Ohn Gyaw was grilled at a news conference about Burma's repression of Aung San Suu Kyi's pro-democracy movement.
In another development, a delegation of EU foreign ministers met in Jakarta on Monday with Ohn Gyaw. The meeting was part of a concerted effort by the West to persuade the military government in Rangoon to recognise the 1990 election. The EU delegation was led by the Irish foreign minister, Dick Spring.

Gyaw "What we mean to say multi-party system is that now we are drafting a new constitution and under this constitution there will be a government - there will be two houses. But in the two houses when the election is held there will be the participation, a contesting of multi-parties, many parties will be taking part.";

Gyaw sot "They were not arrested (referring to NLD members before May conference in Burma). They were invited and they were asked what was the purpose of their meeting. If there was arrests, there would be charges and they would be detained but they were not detained. If you know the difference....it was a preventive exercise. There was no arrests.";
