"A lot of people across the world have very little trust in the United Nations system and big leaders from bigger countries not being here doesn't give a good signal. However, this is the only multilateral process that works on consensus of 197 other countries or 198 with the US potentially pulling out from this, so that needs the world needs to get together to try to come up with the best solutions to fight this climate crisis and if one leader is not there, the climate crisis doesn't wait for one leader or one country it impacts communities like my pacific, without having the world leaders absent at such conferences. But we need to make sure that the outcome is very ambitious in terms of the climate finance that is necessary but also in terms of the adaptation and loss and damage elements of this conference."

STORYLINE:
World leaders are converging Tuesday on the United Nations annual climate conference in Baku, Azerbaijan, though some major figures will be missing.
Heads of state from China, the United States, India and European nations like Germany and France will not be in attendance this year.
But a strong showing is expected from the leaders of some of the world's most climate-vulnerable countries.
Several small island nations presidents and over a dozen leaders from countries across Africa are expected to speak over the two-day World Leaders' Summit at the COP29 conference.
