Around 20 people were killed and dozens injured in Donetsk in what local authorities in the breakaway Ukrainian city claimed was an attack from Ukrainian forces using a Tochka-U missile.
Eyewitnesses told The Associated Press that Donetsk's air-defence system succeeded in shooting the missile out of mid-air, but that sent it hurtling towards the Shevchenko Boulevard where its fragmentation mechanism went off and sent lethal ballistic splinters in all directions, claiming scores of casualties.
Fragments of the missiles could be found spread over hundreds of metres of a busy part of the Russian-backed separatist-held city.
Fire brigades and ambulances were deployed to the scene alongside security forces.
