At least 55 have been killed in deadly explosions across Iraq.

Seventeen car bombs were detonated in majority Shia areas, according to the security services.

In the capital of Baghdad, ten car bombs targeting six different areas wounded another 161 people.

Around 10 were killed when a bomb struck a taxi terminal in the city of Kut, 150 kms southeast of the capital. Four more died in an explosion in Mahmoudiya, 20kms to the south, and two bombs in Samawa, further south, killed two.

This year has been one of the deadliest since the 2003 invasion of Iraq, with almost 4,000 people killed, over 810 in July alone.

Recently Sunni Islamist militants have regained momentum in their insurgency against the Shia led government. Sectarian tensions have been stoked by the civil war in neighbouring Syria.
