Although the application of clinical pharmacogenetics in practice is still rare, a consortium is working to facilitate the implementation of pharmacogenetics testing. We spoke to Mary Relling, of the Pharmaceutical Sciences Department at St Jude's Children's Research Hospital, USA, about this consortium. “Our goal is to write guidelines for prescribing for specific gene-drug pairs,” she said.
Dr Relling’s work at St Jude’s involves elucidating the basis for inter-individual differences in drug responses and translating that knowledge into patient care as soon as possible. In the latest video of our #PSWC2017 series, and published for FIP members in the International Pharmacy Journal last month, Dr Relling also talks about the current application of genetic testing and precision medicine in the treatment of leukaemia.
