Physicist Professor Colin Carlile attended the Awards Ceremonies at the University of Huddersfield to receive the award of Honorary Doctorate of the University. He is the former Director General of the European Spallation Source (ESS), which is due to be built in Lund in Sweden. Here he talks about the need for the facility, its uses and importantly, how research facilities, like the ESS, need to realise the commercial value of their work and explore ways of ensuring a return on the innovations discovered.
