인도 대통령에 최하층 출신 코빈드 당선
A relatively unknown politician and member of India's Dalit, or "untouchable," community has been elected as the country's 14th president.
Ram Nath Kovind was declared winner on Thursday after an overwhelming majority of votes by lawmakers on Monday.
With more on this and other news around the world…we turn to Ro Aram…
Aram… Kovind comes from the lowest end of India's long-engrained hierarchy… anything on his background and what roles he will take as president?
Well Mark… 71-year-old Kovind is a member of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's governing Bharatiya Janata Party and comes from a very humble upbringing, growing up in a mud hut.
He is also a former governor of the eastern state of Bihar and the second Dalit to hold a top constitutional position.
His five-year term, which starts on Tuesday, is largely ceremonial, with the prime minister and his cabinet holding executive power.
But Kovind will play a key part in political crises, such as deciding which party is in the best position to form a government when a general election is inconclusive.
Kovind's win is widely viewed as part of a strategy by Prime Minister Modi to widen support among India's 200 million-strong Dalit community ahead of the 2019 general election.
Modi's ruling BJP has long been accused of a deep-seated bias against the country's Muslims population.
He and Kovind are both associated with the RSS, or National Volunteer Corps, a Hindu group that has been accused of stoking religious hatred against Muslims.
Earlier this week, the BJP named a cabinet minister also with strong Hindu nationalist roots as its vice president candidate for an election to be held on August fifth.
