the four wall access cavity serve several purposes:
1. correct positioning of the rubber dam so that the clamp is stable and the rubber dam isolates the field well
2. keeping the pulp chamber constantly flooded with as much irrigating solution as possible
3. defining easily recognizable, stable reference points for rubber stops on the endodontic instrument
4. introducing the temporary medication without affecting the interproximal papillae
