Gabino Ezeiza, nicknamed ‘Negro Ezeiza’, was a musician born in Argentina in 1858. He was a Payador, a performer of traditional ‘Payada’ music which was popular in Argentina, Uruguay and Chile. ‘Payadas’ were essentially battles with words. Payadores would compose verses in which they would challenge and often insult their opponent, who would then sing back in response. The person who faltered first would lose.
Gabino Ezeiza is the most famous Payador in Argentinian history, and as such the 23rd June is celebrated every year in Argentina as ‘The National Day of The Payador’. Hear his story in this 60-second video!
