It began as the perfect family holiday, building memories of smiles and laughter in the Spanish sun that parents Sam and Luke would cherish for years to come. But on the last night, their young boys’ visit to the resort games room ended up a parent’s worst nightmare when their five-year-old son, Oscar, was crushed by an arcade machine.
Oscar was just unconscious on the floor. His face was covered in blood and his eyes were just glazed over and his face was beginning to swell.
Oscar Donnelly was playing with his two older brothers, when the unsecured darts machine fell on top of him, causing serious injuries to his head.
I just thought he was dying, having his last few breaths from the sounds he was making.
Oscar was rushed to Girona hospital where doctors placed him on life support in order to monitor the bleed and swelling to his brain.
I just remember all the doctors and nurses around him and his little body on the bed just full of tubes and wires and didn’t seem like there was a part on his body, bless him, that didn’t have something poking out of him. And that’s when we started noticing he wasn’t closing his eye.
The traumatic experience has left Oscar with facial paralysis – the result of which is that Oscar is unable to blink and must have his eye taped down at night and have regular drops administered to replace tears.
Oscar is no longer able to smile.
His parents have since discovered that he is permanently deaf in his left ear, which affects Oscar’s balance.
He has also been left with a rare form of diabetes, called Diabetes Insipidus. The life-long disorder, which usually only affects about 1 in 25,000, will need to be managed with medication and means that Oscar’s body cannot retain enough water.
It’s just not how I thought he’d grow up. He always wants to hide under his blanket all the time. He gets so frustrated really easily and he just lashes out. We don’t know how it’s going to affect his future in terms of work, employment, education.
Luke and Sam have appointed travel litigation lawyers to launch legal action against the Spanish hotel to hold them responsible for Oscar’s injuries.
You know, we’re talking about a five-year-old here who used to be a lively little boy, full of life, completely healthy and then from day to the next his life has been completely ruined. The hotel and all of the holiday providers have this duty to ensure that the customers are in a safe environment. This should never happen again.
All we did was go on holiday and now it’s changed his life forever.
As the family come to terms with how Oscar’s future may be affected by his injuries, mum, Sam, hopes that Oscar’s case will raise awareness so that other families may be aware of the risks that seemingly safe holidays can pose.
