Pyramiden is an abandoned and uninhabited mining settlement on the Svalbard archipelago with formerly over 1000 inhabitants. Pyramids is located on the Billefjord, a foothill of the Isfjord, about two to three hours northeast of Longyearbyen, in the so-called Dickson Land. The place ownes its name to the pyramid shape of the mountain of the same name, at the foot of which it lies.
After a Swedish company started coal mining in 1921, the rights were acquired by the Soviet Trust Arktikugol in the late 1920s. The Soviet Union, as a signatory to the Treaty of Split, also had the right to extract raw materials from the archipelago belonging to Norway. In 1941, the city was evacuated to protect it from the war, but remained largely undestructed. Since the second Russian coal settlement, Barentsburg, which is still in operation today, was almost completely destroyed, pyramids after the Second World War, the Soviet government's most important and largest coal mining settlement in the Arctic ...
