Nové Město delivered spectacular racing at Round 3 of the Mercedes-Benz UCI MTB Cross-Country World Cup, with neck-and-neck battles, crashes, mechanicals, incredible tactics and sprint finishes in both the Women's and Men's races. It was non-stop excitement from start to finish.
Among the more technical tracks of the season, Nové Město has a perfect mix of technical climbs and descents, and has something for every rider. Add to this the electric nature of the spectator-packed grandstands and woods, and Nové Město is firm favourite with riders and fans alike. Read on to find out who took the all-important wins on the day.
Cresting into the arena, the air was tense with anticipation as a Mexican stand-off played out. It was Langvad who eventually made the attacking pedal stroke, to the roar of a packed grandstand. Jolanda Neff tried to match the attack, but the power of Langvad was unmatchable as she accelerated over the finish line to take her hat-trick of wins at Nové Město, and the World Cup leader's jersey. "It was such a tactical race and super hard. On the last lap I was so sure she was going to get a gap on me," said a delighted Langvad at the finish. "I'm so overwhelmed by this race, it was fantastic."
Cooper looked to have got the best of Schurter in the sprint, but the world champion put in one last effort to get on par, and was extremely relieved to have taken the win. "That was crazy. I thought I had him, and then I saw him (Cooper) coming on the right. That's the hardest sprint I've ever had," said Schurter.
