AT4CS for Indian Armed Forces
The way Indian Army is modernizing its frontline troops, very soon it will be of the deadliest in the world. We all know how our defence procurement works and for years it has been either slogging or undergoing emergency procurement. But the recent steps and decisions taken be government in last 3 years is accelerating the much-needed modernization of our army be it AK-203, new Uniform, new Ballistic Helmet or scopes for Sig Sauer 716. As per the latest update Indian Armed forces have selected Saab’s AT4 weapon through a competitive programme for a single-shot weapon. AT4 will be used by the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force. This order includes the AT4CS AST which means AT4 Confined Space Anti-Structure Tandem-Warhead, which can be fired from confined spaces such as from inside buildings, bunkers and other urban environments. The AT4CS AST offers a tandem warhead with a breach or blast mode, which is optimised to defeat enemies within buildings and to destroy structures, which can create a point of access into them. The contract was signed by FFV Ordnance AB, responsible for Saab’s Ground Combat offer in India.
About AT4CS
AT4 is one of the most popular and successful support weapon families in the market. It is being Operated by a single soldier. This single-shot system has proven efficacy against structures, landing craft, helicopters, armoured vehicles and personnel. Its 84 mm calibre warhead offers enhanced power and performance. Indian Armed Forces are already using our Carl-Gustaf system as their single-shot weapon which will be additional advantage due to platform similarity.
Now, you might ask if DRDO is already developing MANPAD and MPATGM, why there is need of AT4. Its because its light weight – almost half the weight of MANPAD or MPATGM. It features recoilless smoothbore anti-tank ammunition which will be quite handy in anti-armour role. It has an effective firing range of 300m for point targets and maximum firing range of 500m for area target.
Reliability of AT4CS
The weapon was designed for simple to use, rugged, and far more accurate than previous individual antiarmor weapons against moving targets. AT4 is not only be able to penetrate armour, but also have a devastating beyond-armour effect after penetration. FFV and the Swedish Army began the first evaluation firings of the prototype AT4s in the spring of 1981 with 100 tested by early 1982. It has been used extensively used by US armed forces in Iraq war.
AT4-CS improvement
AT4-CS (Confined Space) version is specially designed for urban warfare. This version uses a saltwater counter mass in the rear of the launcher to absorb the back blast; the resulting spray captures and dramatically slows down the pressure wave, allowing troops to fire from enclosed areas. The AT4-CS version also reduced its muzzle velocity from the original 290 m/s to 220 m/s as part of its effort to be user-safe in a confined space.
