Communications equipment found in Chinese made cranes in U.S. ports have led to fears they could be used for espionage or the disruption of supply chains, according to the chair of the Homeland Security Committee.
Cellular Modems are understood to have been found on a number of these cranes in U.S. ports, with their being no clear purpose for their presence, meaning while they serve no role in normal operations, the modems could enable remote access to the cranes. This equipment was also not documented.
