Some of the representatives of the mushroom kingdom, which, along with morels and a morel cap, not only appear before other mushrooms, but are also collected by many mushroom pickers. And it is they who often open the mushroom season. Yes, at this time the choice of mushrooms is not as wide as in summer or autumn, but it can't be called very poor either! But this is for advanced mushroom pickers, and I'm talking about ordinary amateurs who don't read mycologists' books. I know that for many, the season does not begin with the first spring mushrooms, but with the appearance of the first "noble" ones: white, ginger, aspen... Although fans of mushrooms are always ready to challenge the nobility of all other mushrooms.
Giant lines or simply gigas, as they are called by mushroom pickers, grow at about the same time as ordinary lines, but often bear fruit longer than them. They prefer old birch groves or mixed forest with an admixture of birch. At the same time, the largest and most massive yield of fruit bodies of mushrooms is observed among the fallen and half-rotted trunks of birch trees.
At one time, domestic mycologists convinced us that our lines could not be such, because of the peculiarities of climatic conditions. Giant stitches are completely safe for health, unlike ordinary stitches, they do not synthesize the poison gyrometrin at all, so there is no need to boil them beforehand.
Visually, the mushroom looks like a huge walnut or brain. Their color is usually yellow (when young) and closer to orange (when the mushroom is ripe). Those mushrooms that grow in a sunny place are always brighter colored and have a darker color, we can say that they are tanned in the sun. The entire surface is sinuous and resembles velvet up close. The diameter of the cap is usually 8-30 cm, its edges are connected to the stem. The leg is usually irregular in shape, short, furrowed-folded, often immersed in the soil, hollow inside, whitish, 2-3 cm long, wide, quite often completely hidden by the cap. Unlike all other mushrooms, the lines are gigantic when they grow, they do not push the soil and leaves apart, but pass through it. And therefore, the lower part of the leg includes the soil, so do not spare the leg and cut as much as possible, to the white body, otherwise the sand will creak on your teeth. The very flesh of the mushroom is brittle. That is, it is strong, but brittle (such a straight marshmallow in chocolate). At the break, the mushroom resembles a wax product at all (like an unripe acorn inside). The most interesting thing for the mushroom picker is the collection. In these mushrooms, it begins in mid-April and lasts until mid-May (sometimes until the end of May). Perhaps it's a good option to taste fresh mushrooms or just take a walk in the woods.
The beauty of the collection is that at the beginning of May these mushrooms are visible from afar. The grass does not have time to grow yet, and the lines are quietly sticking out in the clearing. By the middle of May, it is already more difficult to find them.
If you find one mushroom, then you should not run further, since this species likes to grow in groups and in one place you can find 8-10 mushrooms at once.
The best option for cooking this mushroom according to our version is frying in sour cream. Giant lines can also be pickled, stewed and added to salads.
