Gov. Bev Perdue joined Transportation Secretary Gene Conti, N.C. Board of Transportation member Ralph Womble, and other state and local leaders Sept. 29 to officially break ground on phase one of the I-85 Corridor Improvement Project in Davidson and Rowan counties. It includes widening nearly 3.5 miles of I-85 from four lanes to eight lanes and replacing eight bridges, including the aging Yadkin River bridge.
The project will improve safety and mobility for motorists, while benefitting the economy by creating or sustaining more than 200 good-paying jobs.
