In 1998, when Joe was about to turn 50, his wife recommended he go to the doctor for a routine check-up, including a prostate exam. Luckily, his cancer was caught early. Joe was helped through his treatment by Life with Cancer®, part of Inova Health System's Cancer Services program, where he was able to find the support of other men going through the same thing. Years later, when his wife was diagnosed with terminal colorectal cancer, he found yet more support, through Life with Cancer's grief program.
These support services are just some of the many community benefits offered at the program's Dewberry Family Center, a 16,000-square-foot facility dedicated to education, outreach and support of cancer patients, survivors and family members throughout the region, at no additional cost, regardless of where patients are treated for their disease.
The only health system-affiliated resource center of its kind in Northern Virginia, the house offers a medical library focusing on cancer, eight private and group counseling rooms, children's and adult art-therapy studios, a large exercise room for classes specifically designed for cancer patients, and a "reflection garden" to help patients and family members with coping and comfort. The Center was funded by generous philanthropic donations from patients, their loved ones and community members.
