UIL Ukrainian Film Festival: Reflections, 19-22 September | Curzon Soho, London
The Ukrainian Film Festival returns to London from the 19th to the 22nd of September 2024. It will be held at Curzon Soho, and this year’s theme is ‘Reflections’. The festival will delve into the search for identity in challenging times, self-reflection, self-determination, and the recognition and acceptance of a present shaped by our past.
These four days offer a special tribute to the history of Ukrainian cinema by celebrating the 130th anniversary of the legendary filmmaker Oleksandr Dovzhenko. Attendees will have the opportunity to view his masterpiece, Earth, accompanied by a contemporary score composed by the acclaimed Ukrainian band DakhaBrakha. In addition to this cinematic milestone, the festival will showcase a series of films that resonate with Ukraine’s current struggles.
Mission 200, directed by Volodymyr Sydko, tells a poignant story of Tetiana, a Ukrainian woman who puts her life on hold to become a modern-day Charon, transporting the bodies of fallen soldiers. Oksana Karpovych’s conceptual documentary, Intercepted, offers an unflinching confrontation with the enemy as it attempts to occupy Ukraine. The festival also features a selection of short films from the Kyiv International Short Film Festival, highlighting the work of young Ukrainian filmmakers as they explore the impact of
displacement on millions of their compatriots. Maryna Er Gorbach’s Klondike presents a powerful dramatisation of the tragic downing of Malaysian flight MH17 over the Donetsk region, capturing the lives of those caught in the epicentre of this catastrophe.
The films selected for the 2024 Ukrainian Film Festival paint vivid portraits of Ukrainians — exhausted, angered, grieving, yet steadfast in their resolve to continue the fight for freedom.
