On Tuesday, Shiite Muslims in Iran observed Ashoura, a remembrance of the martyrdom of Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, in the seventh century.
Red flags, which stand for Hussein's blood, and other symbols of piety and repentance were flown over the capital and other cities more than 1,340 years after Hussein's passing.
More than 10% of the 1.8 billion Muslims worldwide identify as Shiites, who see Hussein as the Prophet Muhammad's legitimate heir.
His combat death at the hands of Sunnis at Karbala, south of Baghdad, caused a profound rift in Islam and still has a significant influence on Shiite identity today.
