Every year, thousands of workers in Philadelphia, and more across the country, are victims of wage theft. Wage theft is the illegal practice of employers withholding wages or denying benefits that are rightfully owed to an employee. Common examples of wage theft include failing to pay regular or overtime wages, misclassifying employees as independent contractors, making illegal deductions in pay, or requiring employees to work off the clock. Although the problem is widespread, it is underreported, often due to fear of retaliation.
