You wanted to know if it's possible to have a falsely positive home pregnancy test result. And it is possible. There are a few things that can cause it. The first is operator error, or interpreting a pregnancy test result outside of the window recommended by the manufacturer of the test. For example, most manufactures say that a home pregnancy test should be read within about 3 to 5 minutes after obtaining the sample. You might be tempted to set the pregnancy test in a place where you can go back and check it later. So if you come back in an hour or 2, you might see a slightly positive result, and that result is not reliable. You need to go off of what you saw during the first 3 to 5 minutes after obtaining the sample.
It's also possible to have a falsely positive result if you've had a biochemical pregnancy, or a loss shortly after implantation. Other instances include times when a woman is receiving medications with HCG in them, or receiving HCG injections, like in the case of infertility treatment. It's possible to get a falsely positive result due to that. HCG (or the hormone detected by home pregnancy tests) can also be secreted by a tumor, and this would register a pregnancy test positive, but falsely so.
So basically, if you have any questions about your pregnancy test results, talk with doctor. And based on their knowledge of your circumstances and ability to ask more specific questions, they'll determine if further investigation is warranted to help you settle it once and for all.
