STORYLINE
Thousands of Israeli police officers, border guards and soldiers remained deployed at key checkpoints throughout the southern part of the country early on Tuesday.
The aim of the operation is to prevent supporters of the Gaza settlers from converging on the area to disrupt the process of forcibly removing the remaining settlers from their homes.
Religious nationalists have threatened to march on the crossing points into Gaza and infiltrate the settlements.
Police estimate some three thousand protesters have already infiltrated Gaza, swelling the ranks of those who will have to be removed by force when a final deadline expires at midnight on Tuesday.
Extra forces have been drafted in from all Israeli cities, a move that has led some newspapers to note that while security in the south is certainly heightened, lawbreakers elsewhere in the country are getting a free ride.
