HOUSTON — Houston authorities have a person of interest in custody following the fatal shooting of a veteran police officer on Friday night at a gas station in northwest Harris County, Texas.

According to ABC affiliate KTRK-TV Houston, the person of interest was detained at a home in Copperfield during the course of an intense manhunt for the officer's killer.

Authorities told KHOU, that Harris County deputy, Darren Goforth was refilling his patrol car’s gas tank when a man came up from behind and fired multiple shots at him. When Goforth fell to the ground, police say the man fired more shots at the stricken officer.

The man is believed to have fled in a Ford Ranger pickup truck. According to the Harris County sheriff’s office, Goforth was a ten year veteran and is survived a wife and two children.

KTRK-TV Houston reports that the shooting marks the first time a police officer has been fatally shot in Texas this year.
