Rizal Hall, Malacañan Palace
12 June 2014
After leading the flag-raising ceremony in Naga City earlier in the day, President Benigno S. Aquino III proceeded to Malacañan Palace to hold the traditional Independence Day 'Vin d'Honneur' for members of the diplomatic community.
As the President raised the 'wine of honor', he mentioned in his brief remarks that being an independent country meant being part of the international community, as nations must work alongside its neighbors to address the world's problems. And this was made clear by the outpour of assistance and sympathy of many countries to the Filipino people in the aftermath of super typhoon Haiyan.
"These are relationships that we want to nurture -- these are relationships that any country of goodwill should commit to nurturing. It is my hope that we can continue to maximize cooperation and avenues for dialogue, in realizing aspirations for our people," he said.
Meanwhile, the Papal Nuncio of the Vatican to the Philippines, Archbishop Giussepe Pinto also offered a toast to the renewal of the esteemed friendship among the diplomatic corps and to the greater progress and prosperity of the Filipino people.
Also present were Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario and other members of the Cabinet, senior government officials and members of international organizations.
