In these Flying In A Blue Dream guitar lesson videos, I will demonstrate note-for-note how to play one Joe Satriani's most beloved instrumentals in it's entirety.
Within a very static backdrop, Joe Satriani created such an original sounding instrumental with "Flying In a Blue Dream". The beautiful Lydian based melodies that begin and end the track are some of the best he has ever come up with.
I will open the the first video lesson with a performance of the first section of these melodies. You will need a guitar tone has some nice sustain in order to make the performance sound like the recording. I have decided to skip the intro and outro sections which both consist mostly of just feedback. You can recreate that feedback by playing the note C at the 3rd fret 5th string then stand at the right point in front of your amp to make it feedback. You will then need to find the other places to stand in front of your amp so that the feedback changes to the appropriate pitch.
This is obviously impossible to teach in a video lesson since everyone has different amps placed differently in front of them. It will be something you will have to test every time you place your amp in a new location if you want to perform the song live or something.
After the first melody section I will spend the second half of the first video lesson teaching about 2/3's of the main guitar solo. This solo has tons of incredible legato licks, which is a signature of Joe Satriani. I will teach it phrase-by-phrase so I feel that would be a good idea for you to tackle it as well.
In the second video lesson I will cover the rest of the solo and the outro melody section.
For the third and final video lesson, I will show you how to play the chords. The tuning is very odd since Satriani took an acoustic guitar and tuned it to a low, open F chord [C-F-C-F-A-C, low to high]. The rhythm work itself is quite simple though.
I hope you guys enjoy learning this at times atmospheric and also virtuosic guitar instrumental from the legendary Joe Satriani.
