Traci views being diagnosed with breast cancer as a gift because it made her look at life differently. That new view led her to do whatever was required to ensure that she was one thing – a survivor.
Traci’s journey to survivorship included radiation, chemotherapy and a double mastectomy (removal of breast tissue and lymph nodes). She then had breast reconstruction surgery, which has become a key element in post-mastectomy treatment and recovery for breast cancer patients.
While Traci struggled with the way she looked without hair and with prosthetic breasts before reconstruction, she put her trust in the Penn Medicine doctors who treated her with respect and offered thorough explanations about her care.
“My whole process and my journey wasn’t easy, what came out of it for me was I found a passion, I enjoy my life to the fullest, I love my life now – not that I didn’t before – but I appreciate it and understand it much better after this long journey.”
