*How to make a #woodenplayhouse from pallets: getting started*
To make your own DIY outdoor playhouse, you will need:
*Tools:*
• Jigsaw
• Combi drill
• Multi-sander
• Reciprocating saw
*Materials:*
• Heavy-duty pallet for base
• 4-5 additional pallets
• Willow branches
• Square timbers
• Roof battens
• Regular wooden boards
• Wood paint
• Wood screws
*Building a wooden playhouse: step-by-step guide*
*1. Prepare the base structure* – Once you have found the perfect space for your DIY wooden playhouse it’s time to position the heavy-duty pallet that will form the base. Make sure the ground underneath is flat and stable.
Next, position a large pallet – ideally the same length as the base – to the rear and leave freestanding. Then, position your side and front pallets. If you want to create a counter, choose a narrower pallet for the front. Once you are happy with the arrangement it’s time to screw them all together.
*2. Saw the pallets to length* – You will likely have pallets that don’t quite fit together. After making and marking your measurements, use a reciprocating saw to cut to the desired size. Add the cut pallets to your base structure to achieve the desired height. Once in place, screw the additional pallets together.
*3. Create the counter space* – When you build your own playhouse it’s the little touches that make it special. In our example, we created a counter space with wooden boards and a simple wooden slat framework to make a window.
Using a similar structure, you could also create a flowerbed or storage area. How else do you plan to make your DIY playhouse unique? Let us know in the comments!
*4. Fasten the roof structure* – To create the roof use an extra pallet, create your own with slats, or use a combination of both. Cut to size with a jigsaw and secure to the front and rear walls. Add willow branches to finish.
*5. Cut out the entrance* – Use a reciprocating saw to cut out an entrance from one of the side pallets.
*Tip:* Use surplus cut-offs to secure the structure and create a door frame.
*6. Sand and finish* – Use a multi-sander to thoroughly sand all surfaces and edges, making sure the playhouse is safe for children. Now you can add the finishing touches with your children by painting with cool colours.
*Tip:* if your DIY playhouse is for outdoor use, it’s a good idea to protect the wood with a weatherproof glaze or varnish.
