Major-General Peter Cosgrove, Australian head of the United Nations force in East Timor arrived in Dili on Monday to a be met by Indonesian military officers.
Cosgrove described the reception of the peacekeeping force in Dili as cordial, saying it had not encountered any resistance since it began entering on Monday morning.

"The force has deployed into Dili very rapidly and I particularly note the co-operation and understanding of the TNI (Indonesian military). This bodes well for the continued peaceful arrival of the force and with this sort of co-operation we'll be able to get out and about and start expanding our area of operations in the near future."

Cosgrove also held discussions with a delegation of commanders from other members of the international peacekeeping force including Britain, Italy, Thailand, the Philippines, Singapore and the United Nations.
Meanwhile, the peacekeepers moved on from the airport to secure Dili's port area.
The peacekeepers need to secure the docks to allow more troops and heavy equipment to enter East Timor.
