Go for farmers that have quality breed of fishes, this one mistake a lot of persons
make, they just buy fingerlings and stock their pond without verifying the quality
of fishes. If you buy bad fingerlings you can never get good results, make your
findings where you can get good breeds.
Quality seed or fingerlings should be collected from certified or recognised
hatcheries with good brood stocks. Quality seed or fingerlings of African catfish are active with uniformly dark grey-white patches colouration. Whitish-grey colour
is of poor quality.
Do not purchase fingerlings if
❖ They have less than two barbels, no tail or missing fins,
❖ They show signs of physical injury or bleeding,
❖ They are deformed
❖ They are less than 10cm in total length
❖ If fingerlings in the holding unit in the hatchery are sluggish or inactive
