Františkovy Lázně (German: Franzensbad) is a town in the Cheb district of the Karlovy Vary Region, 5 km north of Cheb. It has approximately 5,800 inhabitants. Since 2021, the city has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with Mariánské Lázně and Karlovy Vary under the heading Famous Spa Towns of Europe.

History of the spa

The healing effects of the local springs have been known since the 15th century. The water from the springs was used by the local population and sold throughout Germany. In the 1700s, sales of Franzensbad water in Germany exceeded the volume of water from all German baths. The town was founded in 1793 by Emperor Franz I. The city takes its name from Franz I. Bernhard Adler (1753-1810), a physician and native of Cheb, considered the founder of the world's first spa.
