Fish are enjoying their new home in Lake Ontario’s Inner Harbour! We are so excited to share this video showing early success of our new fish coves in the Port Lands. Restoring a natural shoreline creates ecological habitats for all kinds of wildlife. This video shows three native fish species not found at this location before using newly created habitat: Largemouth Bass, Bluegill and Pumpkinseed. Thanks to TRCA for the video!
Construction of the west cove was completed two years ago in an area that previously offered very poor fish habitat. The straight, vertical walls of the Keating Channel were unappealing for fish – like a house with no furniture. for decades as a result of lake filling and industrial operations in the old Toronto Inner Harbour. Now, we can see fish are using their new, fully-furnished (rocks, logs) habitat are returning and thriving.
The coves were designed by Interfluve and Michael Van Valkenburg Associates and Toronto and Region Conservation Authority and Aquatic Habitat Toronto have been part of the collaboration and team effort to bring life to this project.
