Different tricks were used during scenes with Sam and Neville. In the lab, the nearby trainers would cue the dog to play dead, and during a later shoot where Sam tries to bite Neville, a chew toy was put underneath Will’s shirt. The toy and the trainer are actually in the scene, but they were removed during post-production. Will had such a great relationship with the dog, Abbey, that he tried to adopt the dog. The trainer couldn’t be persuaded.
