2025년 새해 경제 전망
Welcome to Press Perspective for this Friday January 3rd here in Seoul.
I'm Min Sunhee.
Today we touch upon prospects for the global economy this year as seen by the press and pundits.
For this I have Steven Borowiec with Nikkei Asia
Steven it's great to have you on.
I also have Professor Oh Joon-seok at Sookmyung Women's University joining us virtually.
Professor Oh welcome back and happy new year.
1) Steven, let's begin with projections about the global economy for 2025 as shared by financial entities like the IMF as well as economic blocs like the OECD.
2) Professor Oh, the Finance Ministry says the Korean economy will expand 1-point-8 percent this year, lower than an earlier projection by the Bank of Korea, which forecast a 1-point-9 percent growth back in November.
What are your thoughts?
Is Korea only likely to see weak growth this year?
3) Steven, perhaps, the greatest variable for the global economy this year is Trump's protectionist policy.
What have been some of the latest headlines with regard to this reality, and what countermeasures have been proposed, if any?
4) Professor Oh, Korea's exports marked a fresh annual record by surging over 8% last year despite the rampant presence of many risk factors including wars in different parts of the world.
How do you explain this stellar performance?
5) Steven, on a somber note.
Bloomberg claims the assets of emerging markets are losing ground.
Do tell us a bit more about this coverage and its broader implications.
6) Professor Oh, the foreign exchange market is fueling much anxiety among those here in the country as the South Korean won continues to weaken against major currencies.
What is your outlook for this year?
Are we ushering in an era of 1,500 won per U.S. dollar?
7) And Steven, what is the projection for the Korean stock market this year among the foreign media?
8) Professor Oh, some pundits claim the "kimchi premium" on Bitcoin has soared amid the country's political unrest.
What exactly do they mean, and should we be concerned?
9) Steven, broadly speaking, what appears to be THE variable for the stability of the Korean economy this year?
10) Professor Oh, what countermeasures do you propose for the Korean economy as it seeks to navigate a rather challenging environment this year?
All right.
