Presented By:
Kevin Nelson, Ph.D
Franca Azzato
Speaker Biography:
Franca has worked as a Medical Scientist for the past 21 years in the Bacteriology Section of the Victorian Infectious Disease Reference Laboratory (VIDRL) - a highly recognised public health laboratory. The main focus of the laboratory has been the diagnosis of bacterial infectious diseases. Her roles include developing and implementing new molecular diagnostic procedures for the detection of a variety of bacterial pathogens. She was promoted to Section Head Scientist in 2018.
Dr. Nelson received his Ph.D. in Molecular Biosciences from Northwestern University. He is a manager of assay development at Abbott Molecular Diagnostics, where he has been developing molecular diagnostic products for the last 10 years. He is currently developing new assays for the fully automated Alinity m System.
Webinar:
Alinity m STI* with extragenital samples: from assay design to real world experience
Webinar Abstract:
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that more than 1 million individuals contract a sexually transmitted infection (STI) every day. The most common STI pathogens are Chlamydia trachomatis (CT), Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG), and Trichomonas vaginalis (TV). Urogenital infections due to these pathogens can lead to severe consequences in reproductive health and increase the risk of acquiring or transmitting HIV-1 while the extragenital CT and NG infections in the oropharynx and rectum in men and women can serve as a reservoir potentially resulting in future infections and may also lead to severe clinical complications. Accurate and rapid diagnosis of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is essential for timely administration of appropriate treatment and reducing the spread of the disease. This webinar will discuss design and development of Alinity m STI* assay including performance characteristics of Alinity m STI* assay (CT/NG) with extragenital sample types.
