The Great Novel of the Philippines, written by the polymath and polyglot and just straight up genius José Rizal, who was executed at age 35 for writing it, even though he never supported violent uprising. His life sounds just as interesting as he actual story here. Well, there are MANY similarities, and some very nuanced and interesting discussions as well as funny moments.
After the dive into the subconscious that rereading Ernesto Sabato was, it was refreshing to read something more outward looking, a book that sought to change a country, to call out corruption and call for the peaceful education of his people. While the prose is wonderful in its descriptions, characters and dialougue can often be flat, but other times humorous or deep. It was a very mixed read but undoubtedly interesting and overall positive.
